For this feature, we interviewed Pat Schou, Executive Director of Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network (ICAHN). Last month, she received the 2013 Calico Leadership Award at the National Conference of State Flex Programs. The Calico Leadership Award is presented annually by the Technical Assistance and Services Center (TASC), a program of the National Rural Health Resource Center, to an outstanding rural health leader. We caught up with Pat to congratulate her and find out more about what's going on at ICAHN.

NCHN Leadership Summit
Research indicates that the top critical success factor for a health network is its leadership (O’Sullivan, 2009; NCHN 2011).
NCHN supports network leaders through one of our cornerstone programs, the Annual Leadership Summit that kicks off the Leadership Learning Community each year. This is the Leadership Event of the year for network leaders! In addition to the opportunity to network with your peers and colleagues, you will also have access to federal agency representatives to discuss the Health Insurance Marketplaces, continuing ACA implementation, healthcare delivery to our rural Veterans, and potential funding opportunities for networks. NRHA will providing a session strategies to assist you to utilize your influence as a health network leader and a special treat this year will be a fun and interactive session that will provide you with insight into different motivations, actions, communication approaches!

NCHN Quarterly Informational Call

“Rural Veterans in NCHN Members’ Communities and the VHA (Veterans Health Administration) Office of Rural Health” – Thomas F. Klobucar, Ph.D., Deputy Director for VHA-ORH, Washington, DC will provide NCHN members an overview of the mission and responsibilities of the VA-ORH. During the call, he will be asking for feedback on how your network and/or network members are interacting with rural veterans, veteran focused projects you may be involved in or interested to becoming involved in, and overall how rural health networks can become a collaborative partner with the VA ORH in providing services to rural veterans.
Dr. Klobucar will also be sharing next steps for continued collaboration between NCHN and our members and his office. A retired Air Force Senior Master Sergeant, Tom is published in the fields of rural health, home telehealth, chronic disease management, political science, sociology, and research methods. His current work is focused on providing opportunities for the delivery of virtual health care services into rural Veterans’ homes, the expansion of health care provider virtual consultation services in underserved rural areas, and enhancing care coordination for rural Veterans through electronic health information exchange.
